PM: Norway, a key partner of Jordan

جهينة -– Prime Minister Omar Razzaz, held talks with his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg on Sunday on ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields of joint interest.

During a one-on-one meeting followed by an expanded session with the Norwegian premier, who is on a two-day visit, Razzaz said Jordan is keenly interested in further cementing ties as the two countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations.

The two sides reviewed areas of joint cooperation that can be built on, including the opportunities offered by the Jordanian economy in view of the Kingdom's geographical location and the trade agreements it had signed with various world countries, notably the European Union, that Norway can benefit from.

On the political level, the two sides discussed various regional and international issues and efforts to enhance global security and stability, where Razzaz stressed Jordan's support of resolving the Palestinian issue and achieving a just, lasting and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, which guarantees setting up an independent Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also said Jordan recognized Norway's support, alongside many countries in the international community, of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to enable it to continue its role and provide education and healthcare services and relief aid to Palestinian refugees.

On the Syrian crisis, they emphasised the need for a political solution that preserves Syria's territorial integrity and the unity of its people, and ensures the voluntary and safe return of refugees. In this context, they reviewed Jordan's efforts to deal with the refugee crisis and the economic challenges and pressures it placed on the Kingdom's vital services sectors.

During the talks, which were attended by ministers and officials on both sides, Razzaz said Jordan appreciates Norway's support of many programs and projects, particularly those related to building the capacity of local communities to deal with the Syrian refugee crisis.

For her part, Solberg said her visit is part joint efforts to upgrade the level of relations in various fields, and expressed Norway's interest to maintain and strengthen cooperation and coordination with Jordan on various issues.

The Norwegian Prime Minister pledged her country's readiness to continue supporting Jordan to build capacity in the various fields, thus contributing to strengthening the national economy to achieve growth and create job opportunities.

She said Norway recognized the ongoing and relentless efforts made by all Jordanian institutions and people towards the refugees despite the Kingdom's limited resources and the challenges facing its economy.

State Minister for Media Affairs, Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women, Jumana Ghneimat, reviewed Jordan's efforts in empowering women and building their capacity through government programs, foremost of which social and economic empowerment and expanding their participation in the labor market.

In remarks after the talks, Razzaz stressed that Norway had been an important partner of Jordan, especially in the last decade, as it helped the Kingdom to bear the repercussions of regional crises, especially the burdens resulting from the Syrian refugee crisis, and its aid to host communities to cope with the pressure the refugees put on services, including education, health and water.

The Norwegian Prime Minister said her country will carry out its pledge to support refugees and the host countries, adding that Norway this year fulfilled its pledge of $1.2 billion in aid to Jordan over the last four years.

She also stressed Norway's support of Jordan's reform plans, especially those related to job creation and improving economic growth.

Solberg also said Jordan and Norway stand together in the fight against the Daesh terror group, and that they signed an agreement this year to extend cooperation in the defense field.
